I am deeply saddened with the news of Janets passing. Keith has kept me informed of her condition ever since she was taken to the hospital a few days ago. I have reflected all evening on those good years that we tag teamed together at Parkwood. Janet taught 6th grade Language Arts and Social Studies. I was in the room beside her teaching 6th grade Math and Science. I felt we were a real team. I could always depend on her. She was a wonderful teacher...no nonsense in approach, with very high standards. One came out of Mrs. Stegalls/Mrs.Merkles classroom knowing some language arts whether you thought it was important or not!!!! She had an amazing way of motivating students to be serious about their studies. But...the bottom line....she loved and cared for her students and wanted each and every one of them to work to their full potential. I remember all the laughs we shared.....that was back in the day when it was actually fun to teach. The last time I saw Janet was at Parkwood...in the library....during a book fair...about a year ago. It was wonderful to see her and we reminisced about the good old day, so very long ago. She got to meet my little girl, Caroline, and she was proud to tell me about her grand children. Onslow County has lost another good educator. Its been a rough year for that. I am grateful for the privilege I had of working with Janet. May God bless her and may He provide comfort for her family and loved ones.
