I am finding that my Baby Boomer body is suffering from a few maladies. A a bit of arthritis in the knees that makes it hard to walk down steep hills, neck pain from bad posture while writing, some bone density loss that is not quite at the osteoporotic stage but serves as warning to do more weight-bearing exercises to take supplements of Calcium and Vitamin D. And there is this one: a pain that begins in my right shoulder joint and radiates down my arm. Sometimes it is a constant aches, sometimes it throbs, sometimes the pain is sharp. It makes it difficult for me to lift things heavier than a book. Even when resting, my arm is painful, and it is especially painful at night, enough to wake me and reach for the ibuprofen. I would not have mentioned this on my Facebook page. But in talking to my Baby Boomer women friends, I have discovered that many of them have this same shoulder and arm pain--and also in their right arm. The response from their medical professionals range from itll pass in a year, to referrals for physical therapy, or administration of steroid shots. Given the number of Baby Boomer women I now know who have this, I am wondering if it is some kind of age-related epidemic. If so, is this related to our lifestyle, or a lifetime of carrying overloaded purses on our shoulders, and or a lack of exercise that makes our weakening muscles and tendons vulnerable to injury at the joint? I am beginning to think my arm is like a door whose hinges are coming loose. What say you, Baby Boomer women? Is this a problem for you? If so, what do you think it relates to? What do you do for it?
