I am humbled by the kind comments/likes folks have made regarding the article in the Arkansas Traveler, and I am deeply grateful to all the fierce and fabulous folks I have met along the way who share the passion and drive to make a difference. That said, I am compelled to make a correction to one line from the story – a line which did not land right with me: “she makes a point of being anti-racist for people of color”. I am not anti-racist “for” people of color … I am anti-racist alongside people of color. If anything, I am anti-racist “for” other white people. As white folks, it is a conscious choice (and a responsibility) to actively challenge racism – in all its manifestations – on the daily. Grown out of my feminist roots, it is my hope that my choice to be antiracist may inspire other white women (and men) to open their eyes and see racism as their issue with which to deal. It’s the only genuine way in which we can work alongside people of color to change the system. As one of my early role models, Audre Lorde, said: “Mainstream communication does not want women, particularly white women, responding to racism. It wants racism to be accepted as an immutable given in the fabric of your existence, like evening-time or the common cold.” Here is to ripping this fabric to shreds and weaving a better future.
