I am learning about French music training around the turn of the century and the early twentieth century. Claude Debussy entered the Paris Conservatoire at age 11 and stayed for 11 (!) years until he won the Prix de Rome at age 22. At the time, the Conservatoire was a trade school. It did not have lofty goals- It was meant to train musicians to fill positions in the state funded symphony orchestras and opera and ballet orchestras. The thing I did not know as that once you entered the conservatoire you did not study any subject outside of music- only.music. I cant imagine where my musicianship skills would be if I entered that intense environment at age 11 and only had to study music exclusively - no distractions. It makes it clear why so many of the more advanced and well trained musicians (especially the composers- much more advanced!) through history come from France, then. I cant help that I was born in America in 1991...instead of France in 1891. Anyone have a time machine?!
