I am living in the land of mutant insects. The mosquitoes in the yard not only vastly outnumber the human population of probably my entire county, they also team up with each other in their assaults - while one distracts you in front of your face, whirling around but never actually going in for the bite, two others sneak around to attach to the back of your arms and legs. I have teeny tiny black ants, always one or two, hanging around this window in the kitchen. Finally irritated with smashing them one by one for the past few weeks (isnt their colony depleted yet???) I sprayed a couple of them last night with black flag poison, cleared them away, and then sprayed around the bottom of the window with it and left a puddle of the stuff on the counter below. I woke this morning to find an entire brigade suddenly hanging out inside on the counter around my kitchen window! Then Colbs & I stepped onto the front porch & were innocently watering some plants when out of nowhere this fierce looking bee starts buzzing at us. One of the little skinny yellow ones with the sharp stingers. We both ran to the other side of the porch, by the front door. The bee made a landing on a spoon that stuck out from one of my flower pots and just sat there with its wings completely spread out, staring at me like a bull revving up to charge! Probably 30 seconds to a minute go by during this stare-down, in which Colbs & I stood perfectly still just waiting to see what it would do, when suddenly the thing actually does fly up & charge at us! We made a quick retreat into the house just before it got to us, then upon slamming the door shut, I turned to face it from the behind my protective barrier of the front door window, and the thing tried to fly into the window at me! Several times in a row! What is wrong with these critters?? I am feeling like Ive stepped into a science experiment...
