I am not a hero. Of late, many people have called me that - TopicsExpress

I am not a hero. Of late, many people have called me that because of the organising I have been doing lately for charity and the flood relief. Now as I sit down at the mamak with my teh tarik, contemplating the past year and the hectic few weeks, I will let you know that I am no hero. Just your average Joe with a particular set of skills and better than average network via social media. And so I just do what I can do. And thats getting the real heroes together. Times have been hard on all of us lately. Tragedy and disasters have dogged our heels. Social norms are being questioned and challenged. We fight over the smallest things now. We fight over things which we never found worth fighting over before. And over the span of the last 2 years, the bond that we took granted have begun to show signs of strain and fracture. The common citizen was no longer united under one banner and the belief of one nation. But heres the funny thing. Even through these tragedies that would have made a stone shed tears, instead of making us break even further apart, we suddenly seem to have become closer. The small things have been set aside. The important things have resurfaced. And our true colours have shone. Not just to us, but to the world. We have become proud to be Malaysians again. A friend asked Who would you vote as most prominent Malaysian for 2014? I have only one answer. The average Malaysian. The common citizen. The one who stood to be counted when the need was there. The average Joe. So yes...that is why I am no hero. I prefer to be the average Joe. I am proud to be the common citizen. Because my place is beside you. 2015. The year when the Malaysian in us shines brighter and stronger.
