I am not familiar with Iggy Azaleas music. I do know that she is no surprise to me particularly in a hip-hop culture that has been in denial since the deaths of Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. If you are born after 85 and most folks arent cognitively aware of a time where hip-hop/rap was the dominant culture. Jay-Z is the ultimate example of this. From the Marcy Projects to Forbes 500. Sure, the true-schoolers and The Zulu Nation have denounced many things as not hip-hop while at the sametime the large community that claims hip-hop praises work of artists that shape the cultural influences that create an Iggy Azalea. I feel the conversation is complex. And cant be reduced down to simple racism or mimicry. Those are present systematically. But what I find more compelling is the way a cultural influences someones expression positively and negatively.
