I am not looking for change in our Tribal Council leaders as much I am into wanting to see our tribe improve and evolving into a better tribal government and community of tribal members. Reyn Leno was elected to Tribal council member in 1996 and June followed in 1999. I celebrate how far we have come as a tribe in those last 18 years. Please enjoy this post for that alone. (It is not to say any one or two tribal council members could accomplish these great things by themselves as we all know it take five on Tribal Council to be agreement to accomplish anything.) So this post does not get overly long lets consider five years, 1996 - 2000. 1996 Spirit Mountain Community Fund was created giving back 6% of casino profits to the community. The casinos success continues and additional facilities begin construction. Gaming profits are being used by the tribe to improve community services, educational assistance, senior housing, and other underfunded projects. 1997 First Board of trustees formed. Our casino is voted number 1 tourist attraction in Oregon. The Tribe opens new Health & Wellness clinic, signed a 152,000 Indian Health Services contract placing a health director, a nurse, and a nurses aide as full time staff to deliver services to the tribes 6 county area. 1998 A new Governance Center and 9 million dollar 100- room Spirit Mtn Lodge opens. Head Start begins for 3, 4 year olds. 1999 The first per capita given in Dec. for 25% under the Gaming Revenue Allocation Plan dist. net casino revenues to members. The Tribe signs an agreement with US Forest Service to coordinate management of 6,600 acres of national forest lands within the reservation. First Honor Day for tribal elders at St. Michaels. Honored Ann & Raleigh Anderson as oldest and longest married couple. Chinuk Wawa classes begin under Tony Johnson with 10 students for K - 5th grade. 2000 Opened first elder housing complex for 55 and older featuring 38 2-bdrm apartments. How many of these accomplishments do you remember and celebrate? More to follow. In the meantime, I am asking you to carefully consider Reyn, June and Tonya for Tribal Council this year so the celebration can continue. Best to all, Rosemary Jameson
