I am not what a feminist looks like. A reminder for my friends - TopicsExpress

I am not what a feminist looks like. A reminder for my friends of a lesson recently learned. At no point do I or you get to identify ourselves as ally. As a male presenting as male I, at no point, get to identify as feminist. These are titles we who have privilege earn, not bestow. Every day we work hard to earn these titles. Every day we work to prove we are up to the task of being that ally or that feminist. Every day we risk failing. No amount of previous good acts or works matter because once you fail, and you will fail, you lose that title and start over to earn it again. Every time you slip a slur, repeat an inappropriate joke, shame someone for who they are, abuse (however slightly) your privilege or position you lose that ally card and start over from scratch. Thats what I strive for. To earn that place of being identified by those communities as their ally. Its not my call to make. I am not what a feminist looks like. I choose to define myself as a raging misogynist in the very early stages of recovery, where relapse is an ever-present possibility. - Junior Burchall
