I am now in Equador with Rev Franklin Graham and my husband. I have been to many disturbing places (refugee camps in Sudan, Iraq etc.) in the world but I am expecting todays trip to be the most disturbing. I am going to see children LIVING in a LANDFILL! Living in a landfill? Ordinarily I would not believe this possible (children living on smoldering junk and garbage? ) but I watched a documentary about Honduras recently and they have children in that country living in a landfill. This is real. This is the bottom. I am going to help distribute the many shoe boxes that generous Americans put together for these children as part of Operation Christmas Child / Samaritans Purse. Of course these gifts are not going to lift the children out of poverty but it is a gesture that Americans care about them. This year Americans packed more than 10 million shoe boxes for poor children around the world. Americans have giant hearts. Of course there is poverty in the USA (and yes, Samaritans Purse does help many in the USA.) It is important that we all work on a solution to help our fellow Americans and I know that many of you do every day try to help others. I think it is good for me to be reminded about how so many live. I know so many Americans every day, every hour, every second worry about jobs and their families. That is why I go so upset about waste and fraud in our government. I never go to bed at night hungry and so many in the world do. I am so vastly fortunate.
