I am so Catlettsburg, Kentucky, that I remember: Walking to school along two-lane US 23 to school; no school dismissal for weather; stopping in corner groceries (Jordans, Forbesses, Caines, Walters) and being able to buy penny candy, fresh sliced bologna, popsicles, cold pop, etc.; sitting at the football field and listening for the high school band to come marching down Park Street; spending evenings in Sandy City watching baseball games in the summertime; excited for the Labor Day Celebration and the greasy pole climb, greasy pig chase, and street dance; shopping at Freedmans, Iriss, and Zachems; a packed First Methodist Church with Rev. Larry Buskirk at the pulpit; Bible School in the yard behind the church before the parsonage was built; dances on Saturday nights at the youth center with standing room only inside and scores of friends outside; softball and kickball games in the schoolyard when boys and girls were on the same teams; Haney Grade School having the championship football team; having parties and celebrations at school; having a dress code in school with boys hair not on shirt collars and girls wearing dresses only; going to Kentucky Farmers Bank on Saturdays in the drive through and getting balloons from Mary Katherine Crouch; watching the CHS cheerleaders do an outstanding routine to Alley Cat with galvanized garbage cans; going on field trips to Thomas R. Brown High School to watch plays upstairs on the stage; memories.............in my heart now and forever!!
