I am sure you are aware that the illegal trade in dog meat in the Philippines is a matter of great concern to international tourists. In case you are not familiar with this issue, allow me to provide some background: The dog meat trade in the Philippines is an underground industry slaughtering in the region of 500,000 dogs every year for restaurants that specialize in dog meat. Many of these dogs are companion animals, stolen off the streets by unscrupulous traders who bind the dog’s muzzles and tie their front legs behind their backs. Dogs can be left in this condition for days in the blazing sun, without food or water, while the trader accumulates enough animals to fill a lorry. During transport approximately 100 dogs are crammed into a cage the size of a double door fridge. The trip is so arduous that up to 90% of a load of 100 dogs can die from heatstroke or asphyxiation. At the slaughterhouses, the surviving dogs have their throats cut while conscious. Not only is the dog meat trade cruel and illegal, it is also implicated in the spread of rabies, a disease that kills in the region of 300 people and thousands of dogs in the Philippines annually, placing it in the top ten countries for rabies incidence. People in the UK are very sensitive to animal welfare issues, especially those that involve the welfare of dogs. At the same time, the UK tourism market is very important to the Philippines. I am writing to urge you to take whatever steps necessary to tackle the dog meat trade so that the relationship between the UK and the Philippines is not damaged further. I have just taken part in an action to try and end the dog meat trade in the Philippines. I thought you might find it interesting and hope you can support it.
