I am taking a long drive across the Yucatan Peninsula’s archeological sites of Mayan civilization, as well as rural villages where the Mayan language is still principal. The towns and villages are poetic, very poor, yet strikingly beautiful. The contrast between the grandeur of the great Mayan cities and their pyramids and the rural villages that surround them is striking. Yesterday I visited the town of Acanceh and its cemetery. Everywhere I go I visit cemeteries as they tell more about life than pretty much anything else. Staying last night at the famous Hacienda Hotel at the heart of Uxmal, where the walls are covered with famous guest form King and Queens from around the world, to Jacqueline Kennedy, Henry Kissinger and even Che Guevara who we are told had his honeymoon there, waking up from the overwhelming sound of the birds and spending the day wondering about the pyramids and ruins with a local guide and then visiting local cemeteries with open graves was a bit overwhelming.
