I am up to my elbows in forms and paperwork as Helenes tri-annual IEP creeps closer and closer. Im dying a slow and painful death by ballpoint pen and #2 pencil. I have decided that the word appropriate or any variation of that word should be BANISHED from any type of assessment form ever. Seriously. One of these forms asks, Does your child end conversations appropriately? Well, if you mean does she end a sentence with an adverb, no she does not. Thats appropriate, right? If you mean does she end a conversation by saying, &%$@# off! no, she doesnt. Thats appropriate, right? Does she say, Mama, this is the END of this conversation? No. Unless flopping face down on the couch after I say, Please clean up your toys counts. But, Im sure shed tell you thats an ENTIRELY appropriate response, and Id be hard-pressed to argue that she isnt rowing the same oar as six-year-olds everywhere on that one. #assessmentscansuckit #whatarewemeasuringhere
