I attended a very disappointing Indian River Lagoon National Estuary Program meeting this morning. With a Lagoon in Crisis, this organization is reorganizing itself and failing to provide leadership for the Lagoon. Perhaps the most important steps to help the Lagoon in the past year have been the passage of strong fertilizer ordinances by counties and municipalities - mainly due to grassroots efforts of citizens with no help from the NEP. At the first meeting since the reorganization was announced in June, many of the Advisory Board members were highly critical of the draft plan. The Advisory Board voted unanimously to have the draft revised and reviewed in a process that is likely to require another 60 days. Meanwhile, the heavy rains continue to bring nutrients into the Lagoon. The community wants the IRL NEP to demonstrate leadership to save the Lagoon, but the wheels of reorganization are turning very slowly.
