I believe in immigration - we are a nation of immigrants. But - it must be legal. My ancestors came through Ellis Island - after we had Ellis Island and before that, many worked a servitude to come to this nation. When I was a young teen I went to Mexico for the first time. That was the first time I saw poverty at its worst. We were poor as defined by US standards, but what I saw there was heart wrenching. I fell in love with a little girl named Lupita. She spend her days on the street selling tortillas that her mother made a home, in a fire oven, dirt floor, wood shack. No windows, no running water. She was a relative of the family that we were visiting. We stayed in the grande casa which was beautiful, with all the modern conveniences, except for a washer and dryer. We had cooks and maids. Out back there were many shacks like Lupitas. I found that all of those shacks were there to give not so fortunate family members a roof over their heads. Each family had to try their best to provide their basic necessities and to pay for the shelter, they helped their wealthy family by being the maids, cooks, servants and the laundry on washboards. It was an eye-opening experience for me. I wanted so much to bring Lupita home and after much begging I convinced my family to at least try. What a disappointment it was for me and especially for Lupita to find out all the documents required and the long waiting list. I back home to Kansas so very sad and that was over 50 years. There is not a week when I dont think about Lupita and wonder what has happened to her? The point of this, we dont always we get what we want, when we want it and sometimes we never get it. We must work with what we have, try to grow ourselves beyond our circumstances and not give up to reach our dreams. There are successes in every country. It is easier in America - but if we continue to allow open borders, America will become like every other country and the Dream of all Americans will become harder and harder to reach. We have millions - not thousands out of work in America. We need to work on helping those who are here legally and protect our border security, stop the lawlessness of our current president and get our own house in order before we open the floodgates. Lupita, where you are - I still have you in my heart. I pray for your safety and health and happiness.
