I can never watch the movie Sayonara without it ripping the guts - TopicsExpress

I can never watch the movie Sayonara without it ripping the guts out of me. It was filmed in 1957, I left Japan in 1956. My father like the characters played by Red Buttons and Marlon Brando, was in the Air Force. Like Red Buttons, my dad tried to get permission to marry my mother. He did the paperwork three times to try and get the military to give him permission. I was two months old when he was ordered back to the U. S. His commanding officer came in and told him he had 20 minutes to pack and get on the next plane. He was guarded to make sure he couldnt go AWOL. When I saw Sayonara as a teenager in Hawaii, I had no clue how closely some of the story mirrored my mother and fathers story, or how many women and children were left behind in Japan. It would take the long trip back to Japan and my mother, to hear her story, to more fully understand how well the movie captured the heartbreak suffered by so many. He was there long enough to hold me in his arms, to name me Bobby Jean.
