I cant help it! Acts 4:18-20 Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John replied, “Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him? You be the judges! As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.” When you are overcome with emotions it is hard to hide what you feel. As a boy I remember vividly sitting in church where we were supposed to be quiet in that sacred space and inevitably my cousin would do something to make me laugh. I tried to hold it back but it was like an erupting volcano inside of me. My face would turn red, my shoulders would conclude, my eyes would fill with water and I would explode with laughter. My mother would give me that eye....Im going to get you after church. I would explain to my mother, I couldnt help it! Have you ever had a case of the I cant help its?! Something so compelling took over your ability to restrain yourself. When you experience something beyond yourself there is this overwhelming sense that I cannot stay within myself. That ought to be the way we react to our experience with Jesus. Like the old gospel song said, When I said I wasnt going to tell anybody...I couldnt keep it to myself...what the Lord has done for me! Peter and John had healed a man that had been crippled his whole life. He was over 40! The religious leaders got mad because five thousand men gave their life to Christ as a result. They wanted them to stop talking about Jesus. They threatened to beat them. This is what Peter said: 1. Is it better to obey you or to obey God? Every day we have to answer this question. We wrestle internally as to whether we will do what whats popular or whats purposeful. We wrestle with whats convenient and what is our conviction. We must do what God says not men. We cannot please men over God. 2. We cannot help speaking what we have seen. There are experiences we have had with God that will not allow us to be silent. When youve seen God move you cant be still. Henry Blackaby says that if you truly want to experience God you have to find out where God is moving and join him there. God is not in the place of compromise but he moves in the place of conviction. 3. We cannot help but to speak on what we have heard. Its not enough to be hearers of the word but we have to be doers of the word. If we remain silent the rocks we will have to cry out to validate who God is. Gods awesomeness cannot be contained in our silence. We cant help it. We cant help but to give him Glory. We cant help but to give him praise. When I said I would no longer preach or teach his word it was like fire shut up in my bones. Dont try to hold it in today. Let God speak through you to help somebody else. Dear God, I cant help but to give you Glory. I choose to pray to obey you over men. I have to tell the world just how good you are. I refuse to suppress your truth. I will tell the world just how good you are to me. I cant help it! In Jesus Name, Amen
