I cant live, if living is without you. Id jump in front of a train for you ... but you wont do the same. There are many hundreds of famous song lyrics which confuse emotional blackmail as somehow meaning love, and they become our norm. Kids learn and sing these songs starting at school. In my teens, Id have probably loved it if a man said either of the above statements to me, because it would have meant he loved me. Now, if a man said either line to me, Id be out the door so fast he wouldnt see me for dust. I know that these songs are great... who hasnt sung them at the top of their voice after all...but the words do get taken in, and meaning applied to them by young impressionable minds. Then we wonder why others spend much of their lives feeling guilty or imposing guilt. I know Im meant to be all gooey romantic, especially as this is a relationship page. Thing is, current divorce rates are not in any way romantic. Love does not exist in imprisonment, guilt or emotional blackmail. Love exists in freedom, which we can only give when we love and free ourselves. Lyrics like this teach us dependency... Now THAT should be taught in schools. How to love ones self...
