I did a 70 mile ride yesterday to take advantage of the balmy - TopicsExpress

I did a 70 mile ride yesterday to take advantage of the balmy December day and observed some safety issues I wanted to share. Riding through downtown Nyack there are series of traffic lights. As I came to a stop for a red light this guy came from behind me and ran the red without even slowing down. When the light turned green I caught up with this person and said that it was not wise to run the red light and that he was risking a ticket from the police and in addition to creating a bad image for all cyclists. I got zero response and I rode on and came to another red light. This same guy again ran the red without even slowing down. Obviously he did not care that he was risking his own safety and did not take any of my words seriously. Further down the road, just before coming into downtown Piermont I witnessed the police pull over two cyclists for riding double (I assume this fact but do not know for sure). My belief is that it is permissible to ride double if there are no cars back, although I am fully aware there are signs posted stating that you must remain single file or risk a $250 fine. My question is - which incident was the bigger safety gaff? In my mind it was unfortunate that there was not a policeman available to give a ticket to the red light runner, but wonder if the second incident really required the issuance of a ticket. Let me know your opinion.
