I didnt always read Charlie Hebdo when I lived in Paris, satire - TopicsExpress

I didnt always read Charlie Hebdo when I lived in Paris, satire being one of the harder things to comprehend in a second language, but it was an icon of Frances strong satirical press. Regular journalists found themselves sometimes hampered in reporting by convention and social codes; Charlie Hebdo had no such constraints, even regarding Islam. In a nation where people of Arabic descent comprise the second-largest population after French of European origin, France remains on the front line of the irrefutable clash between the West and Islam. The Paris metro was bombed by North African extremists in the mid-90s; one of them was my daily station. And let me just say I am SO proud of John Kerrys press conference in French, expressing U.S. solidarity with one of our oldest allies.
