I didnt go to the climate march in Kelowna today. But I thought I would raise some awareness here. One of my courses that I am taking this year is Geography 201 - Food and Society. Our texbook is Critical Perspectives in Food Studies by/ Oxford University Press . I am going to post a few quotes from the text . To help achieve a more sustainable food system we could reduce the amount of meat in our diet...... More than 60% of the current corn crop goes towards the meat industry. ..IN addition to the direct population burden associated burden associated with factory farms and feedlots, the process of cycling of feed through livestock acts like a magnifying lens for the many environmental costs of industrial moncultures. This magnifying lens has a powerful impact in energy consumption and CHG emissions. For instance, it is estimated that eight time more energy costs goes into a unit of edible protein contained in factory-farmed meat than goes into a unit of edible protein in industrial grain. Rising livestock populations are implicated in the carbon emissions from the conversion of bio-diverse ecosystems to additional cultivation and pasture, as well as in the resulting reduced capacity for sequestering carbon. The global ruminant population is also a major source of methane emissions. When these atmospheric effects are added up, global livestock production has one of the largest impacts in climate change of ALL economic sectors. Arguably it is capitalism that is is the main cause of both globalization and the industrialization of food production. Capitalism emphasizes the profit motive that underlies both the exploitation of workers up and down the food chain and efforts to continuously speed up the food chain. And as already mentioned.....long range social and environmental costs are often ignored in favor of short term profits So yeah....if you want to really help the environment, stop eating meat....or atleast cut down.... If you want to accomplish a more sustainable food system, advocate change away from our destructive capitalist system which only further promotes the meatification of our diets.
