I didn’t even realize this was out until I got my contributor copies this weekend. Crikey, just look at this thing. It’s immense, ~570 pages, with a long ToC full of heavy hitters … from personal longtime idols like Joe Lansdale and David J. Schow and Neil Gaiman, to more recent favorites like Laird Barron and Angela Slatter, with whom a terrible mistake must have been made, since she and I didn’t end up next to each other this time. I don’t know what happened. As for my own pages: Of last year’s work, most of the oxygen seems to have gone to WHOM THE GODS WOULD DESTROY and “The Same Deep Waters As You,” but in this case, editor Paula Guran was most creeped out by “Let My Smile Be Your Umbrella,” which pushes the modern eras self-help cult of relentless positivity to its logical extreme. Go on, get happy.
