I discovered on a long road trip that my 6 year old, Molly, has become an expert on smells. We were passing through Gary, Indiana, and she asked what was that stinking smell, and I said it was pollution coming from a factory that made chemicals or steel. At which point, she corrected me and said, I think your wrong, Daddy--I think the factory makes rotten eggs. Ryan, my 8 year old, thought that was absurd: Men dont make eggs--birds do, Molly! Later, we were passing by some fragrant field, and she asked what another smell. Why thats a eucalyptus field, Molly. And she contradicted me again, NOOOO, DADDY! Thats hand sanitizer. It smells so GOOD. Well, all can say is that I hope its been banner year for the hand sanitizer crops. Theyre predicting an especially bad cold and flu season.
