I dont care what everyone says about all the videos showing the ALS ice water challenge being annoying. My mom (Shirley Long) passed away in 2003 from ALS. When she was first diagnosed in 2000 it was basically unknown to the world. In 2002 it became part of the fund raising effort of MS on the Jerry Lewis Telethon for the first time. Since then it has gotten a lot of recognition but there has still been no progress in its cure or treatment. For those of you that do not know it is one of the worst forms of fatal illnesses an individual can have. This diseases completely deteriorates the muscles which cause complete paralyzation leaving the individual enable to move, eat, talk, or communicate yet still being of sound mind and knowing what is going on around them. Sometimes this disease last for years. My mom is my hero because not only was she a great mother and individual but she lived this way carrying a good heart and upbeat spirit. It was extremely hard to watch her go through this but it was also one of the most rewarding times of my life to be able to be there and learn from her strength. I love and will miss her always. She was the greatest person I will ever know.
