I dont do mad often, and honestly I dont do it well. But folks, I am really mad about this one. This isnt just about the theory of equality that everyone should be treated equal and hold hands and love each other... It is more than that. Let me break down a few things that this means IN REAL LIFE for my family. 1. When our first baby is born in December, Amy will have no legal standing as her parent, nor is adoption a possibility. We have to go through a lawyer (on our own dime) to make sure she can take her to the doctor. Although she is just as spiritually, financially, and emotionally invested, the state of Ohio will not take any of these things into account. 2. Although not likely, it is still possible that a hospital could ask Amy to leave because she is not technically family. We were trying to avoid filling out medical power of attorney forms, but this ruling will make it impossible for us to avoid them. 3. Because we are Federally married, Amy receives no subsidy on the health exchange, but because we are not recognized as married in Ohio my place of employment can choose to not provide health insurance for her. So yeah... I know I should be patient. And I understand this will be pushed to the Supreme Court, but these are just a few of the practical costs for us. I am glad it will force the hand of SCOTUS, but I just wish it wasnt on the backs of so many loving committed couples are pocketing the burden of all the bureaucratic red tape and childish power struggles.
