I dont know how to say this or what response I am asking for, but I am still going to put it out there. I was in Food Lion and a woman named Naomi came up to me holding a small little boy. At first she did not have tears in her eyes, but by the time she began to get to the point of why she stopped me they were streaming down her face. She had a small pack of diapers tucked up under her arm and had asked if I could spare some money for the diapers. The little guy had on his last one till Friday she explained. Well ,,,, me not knowing how expensive diapers are began pulling out the change I just received from my last purchase, then asked how much they were. At this point she hiccupped her way through to tell me the cost. I took one look and said oh well and handed her a Twenty, because the change was not going to be enough.... She said she would be right back with my change. The little one started to fuss when she was walking away, so she stopped and turned around.... he stopped. He was reaching for me over his mothers shoulder, when she turned he about threw himself out of her arms at me. Now mind you he is only one. I took him and he laid his head on my shoulder and stayed there for quite some time... now if this would have been a child that was old enough to be coached by a mother, my jadedness would have taken over and I would not have succumbed to the sweet smell of his hair. He could even talk yet, but his body spoke volumes. No I didnt cry. I wanted to, but knew it would start her crying. All the while this little one is hugging the tears to my eyes she is telling me her story. There are 11 in their family... until a short while ago she was the stay at home Mom with 9 children ranging in the age of 17 to 1(who i was holding). Her husband as she put it Is trying to fight cancer and is not working...now she is the only income and does not get paid till Friday. She gave me her number and I said I would try to find some places here that would be able to help them.... I am new here too...I dont know where to begin except the normal ...DSS, welfare assistance etc.... but they need more than that.... She was not looking for a handout, just a hand up. Can anyone that lives here in S.C. help me find some of the places that offer assistance, gas cards for her get to work, diaper money, anything.... food stamps cannot buy those things. Please if you know of anywhere, please message me.
