I dont normally post things like this, but this hits home to me, so here it goes. Today is World Mental Health Day, a topic that I am very familiar with. It’s time that the stigma on this topic is dropped and people start actively talking about this. People battling depression and other mental illnesses need to not be ashamed and feel secure enough to come forward and ask for the help that they need and quite frankly deserve. Our society needs to provide more resources for patrons and further medical practitioners education on how to help properly, and to not treat individuals as if they are crazy. For more than 10 years I have battled with depression, anxiety, PTSD, as well as bi-polar disorder. Some of you may think I am a lesser or weaker person because of this, and to you I say YOU are the weaker person. These traits don’t make me weak, they don’t make me a coward, but instead they make me stronger. They make me a fighter. You don’t just get rid of mental illness. It’s something you manage. I fight every day to get out of bed and to function in day to day activities, and some days I even fight myself to not take my own life. Its a constant tiring mental and phsycial battle. It’s taken me awhile to be able to accept that. I used to think I was weak, pathetic, and that it would just be better to kill myself. All of this was because of the shame we throw on this topic. Mental health is an illness; a chemical imbalance. It’s not something that we bring onto ourselves, we don’t deserve to have it, it is just another unfortunate life event. Don’t be embarrassed about depression, and don’t be ashamed about it. It’s simply a fact of life. If more people would talk about this taboo topic we wouldn’t have instances where an iconic comedian like Robin Williams, all of a sudden hang themselves because they didn’t know where to turn, and the depression became too much to bare. We are afraid to turn to our family and friends for help, because of their lack of knowledge, but that’s not their fault. So I’m asking you, to not judge individual’s that have mental illnesses, but at the same time don’t take pity on them. All I ask is that you have an open mind, and that you are there to lend an ear to someone that is in need.
