I dont usually publish my work before the newspaper is actually available but this is such a great event and I would encourage all of my Facebook friends to be there if possible. Dont let the word arts give you the wrong impression, its great music, good food and lots of interesting stuff to see. 2014 Midwest Salute to the Arts is Next Weekend At Moody Park by Randy Pierce tribune@heraldpubs Entertainment for all ages, a nice variety of food and drink and five tents filled with the work of diversely talented artists from near and far will be featured at the Midwest Salute to the Arts, a free admission event which is being held at Moody Park on Longacre Drive in Fairview Heights this weekend. The annual art fair, held in Fairview Heights every year except one since 1988, will begin with the Friday night (August 22) gala from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. then continue Saturday, August 23, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Sunday, August 24, from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. The 2014 Salute, the 26th since the event’s inception, will feature the work of 100 artists competing in 11 different categories including clay, fine craft, glass, jewelry (precious metal), mixed media, oil/acrylics, photography, sculpture, watercolor, wood and drawing/printmaking (graphics). Five large white tents will be situated on the park grounds for the purpose of allowing the artists to display and sell their creations and have their work viewed by judges and the public in a relaxed, easy to navigate setting. In the event of warm weather as that which is predicted, huge fans are set up at strategic locations inside the tents to help provide a cooling breeze for those present. Live entertainment will be featured throughout most of Salute weekend, including an eclectic mix of mostly local area artists with diverse playlists that include selections from a broad cross-section of genres. Friday evening between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. on the Classic Stage, set up inside the Salute to the Arts main gallery area not far from the artists’ tents, the Well Hungarians will be performing. . Saturday’s performances on the Classic Stage will begin with Carrier Tunes (brothers Jared and Todd Carrier) from 10 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. then Slow Down Scarlett from noon until 1:30 p.m. followed by Turpentine, appearing at the Salute for the fourth year in a row, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. and closing out the day with City of Lights going from 4 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. Sunday’s Classic Stage performers will be the Eastside Acoustic Duo from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Turpentine again from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Mark Biehl of Belleville from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. On the Performing Arts Stage near the Food Court, Saturday’s entertainment line-up begins with the Metro Dance Company from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. then Revence, a St. Louis-based rock group featuring three guitarists and a drummer, playing from noon until 1:30 p.m., the Muny Kids from 2 to 2:30 p.m. and Lisa Jones from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday’s Performing Arts Stage will feature Revence from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. then from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., it will be the Louis Michael Trio featuring music from the 1970s with a jazz influence including such artists as Bruce Hornsby, Elton John, Billy Joel, Bill Withers, Steely Dan and Todd Rundgren, this group including piano, vocal, saxophone and percussion. St. Louis radio station personality Sherry Farmer will be doing a live remote broadcast for KLOU, 103.3, from 10 a.m. until noon Saturday and an array of fun entertainment for the children will be provided in the special area set aside for them both Saturday and Sunday.. On Saturday, the children’s entertainment will consist of Dooley the Clown from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m. and the Bubble Bus from noon to 1:30 p.m., Izzy the Grizzly, the mascot from the Frontier League baseball team based in nearby Sauget, will be present also from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The Bedouin Spice Belly Dancers will perform for the children from 2:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. followed by Jugglin’ Jeff for an hour. Throughout the day both Saturday and Sunday, Randall Spriggs will be on hand providing enjoyable interaction for the children. Dooley the Clown and the Bubble Bus return on Sunday with their respective times being from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 11 a.m. to noon. Fairview Heights resident Marilyn Kinsella, in her enchanting persona as Taleypo the Story Teller, will entertain children from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday then the dance team from Althoff Catholic High School in Belleville will do their routines from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Members of the Gateway East Artists’ Guild will be demonstrating their talents on Friday evening and both weekend days of the Salute, their work to feature watercolor painting, pencil drawing, acrylic painting, clay hand building, oil painting, hand-painted books, wire jewelry and drawing. Str8Up Magazine will, for the first time in the history of the Salute, have a presence at this year’s event in the form of several demonstrating artists covering various categories like pen and ink drawing, acrylic painting, mixed media painting, wearable fine art, ceramic tiling, sculpture and charcoal portraiture. Additional demonstrations during the art fair will include wood carving by the Holzschnitzers group from Belleville and the Artisan Guild of Southern Illinois.
