I don’t know of any “Fracking” efforts nearby, but if we continue to rely on fossil fuels, we’ll inevitably become dependent on this technique for extracting oil and natural gas from shale deposits. As this report describes, there are three major problems…first is the MASSIVE usage of water that might compete with supplies meant for drinking or agriculture, possible contamination of groundwater during the extraction or years later after it’s capped, and three, perpetuating the cycle of carbon emissions that continues to accelerate climate change.
