I drove by our farm on the way home from work. It was nice and I had the car windows open. A couple of farmers were harvesting wheat. Huge combines and 18 wheelers to haul the grain off. The smell was the same as I remember as a young boy. It took me back a bit. My dad and my Uncle Leland farmed together. My Uncle Leland always operated the combines we had. The first one I can remember was a pull type and would cut a swath around eight feet. The next one was self propelled, but the operator set out on an open platform. My dad and Uncle always had Oliver equipment. Since wheat is harvested in the middle of the summer, I could be there and tag along with Dad. We had old wooden barge bed wagons when I was small. I would get in wagon and play in the wheat. If you have ever been around wheat being harvested, you would recognize that smell. I do not know if it is the stem being cut or the grain being threshed out. If you smelled it, you would not forget the smell.
