I enlisted in April of 1989 under the Delayed Entry Program (now Future Soldier Program) and after graduating from high school in June of that same year, I took a short term summer job then shipped to basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo in September. I hadnt thought about the Army as a possible career option until a recruiter came to my High School in Orangevale, California. He talked about opportunities available to me (see the world, get money for college, etc). Soon after his visit, I went down to the recruiting station and enlisted. My initial enlistment was for 4 years (if I said it once, I said it a thousand times, Im only doing 4 years then Im getting out). I ended up serving a little over 20 years and retiring as a commissioned officer (Major) in 2010. The main reason I joined was to get away from what was familiar to me, also I was very interested in the Army G.I. Bill/Army College Fund. After my first enlistment and a few promotions, I found that I really enjoyed the Army life. I went to Army schools, attended college in the evenings and during lunch whenever possible. My first duty assignment was in Butzbach, Germany and my last assignment was at Fort Knox, Kentucky. If I had to go back and do it all again...I wouldnt change a thing. Army Strong! Enlisted I was 76Y (92Y now). Then commissioned as an Armor Officer, 12A, then 50A Force management. Retired as a Major.
