I feel like helping someone today! Ill share. I had surgery 2 - TopicsExpress

I feel like helping someone today! Ill share. I had surgery 2 years ago..my C5, C6 disc was basically gone. Surgery was the only option. I now have some limited mobility in my neck and some numbness in my fingers on my right hand as a result of this. The numbness is due to permanent nerve damage..it even seems to have effected my vocal chords to some extent...seems odd..but..they do cut you in the front and just move everything out of the way and clamp it off during surgery. I have always been very active..in sports..lifting weights..playing tennis..ect...Roughly 3-4 years ago..I began seeing a chiropractor..I had heard from many how it helps with the aches and pains. This was prior to my surgery. Needless to say..my initial visits were painful.as I was in dire need of an adjustment. I found out that I have a right hip that goes out and that was one of the reasons my lower back would get so tight! My chiropractor took conventional xrays...and gave me a full adjustment..cervical..thoracic..lumbar...hips..As time went by..I began to notice the pain in my right shoulder..i did not think much of it..ignored it for the most part. As more time went by...the pain progressed..down into my shoulder blade...my right pec..down my right arm...I still ignored it for the most part..thinking that I was overdoing it...I continued with my chiro care..began to get massages as well..laid off the tennis for a while..then BAM..woke up one night in such pain..I had to go to the emergency room. An xray revealed that there was a problem with my spine..in the cervical area. I was referred to an orthopedic surgeon...I was in great pain at this time..a MRI showed that my C5,C6 disc was about as thin as a dime..had moved forward.and my two vertebrae had come together..pinching a bundle of nerves..my radial nerve for one..hence all the pain on my right side. Surgery was inevitable. My first major surgery ever. Now..let me state..I am blaming no one...I still go to my chiropractor..I consider us to be good friends...and I consider him to be a fine chiropractor..I would refer him to anyone. I use him at least once a week. I refuse to have my neck manipulated..only very moderately. That may be more mental than anything..but..nonetheless..I cannot bring myself to do it. The spine somewhat resembles a snake...the larger vertebrae are in the lumbar area..thoracic area..and taper in the cervical area..hence..people are more prone to whiplash..ect. the vertebrae and disc are a bit smaller. Do I sometimes wonder if popping my neck in an aggressive manner caused or expedited my injury...yes..I do..but..there is no real proof to really make such a statement..just a common sense feeling in lamen terms. I honestly feel the problem already existed..some wear on the disc...and wrenching it was not a good idea. I possibly could have gotten by without surgery...possibly not..or..maybe had to have surgery much later..there is no way to truly know. In closing I will say this...be responsible for your own health..get a second...third opinion. Do not rely on conventional xrays alone..have an MRI performed..it is much more conclusive...then pursue a healthy regime for you. Dont shrug off the pain as nothing..if you are hurting...there is a reason. Dont jump at the first solution..ask your family physician...ask for a referral for a second opinion..when it comes to your health..there are no lengths to great. Take full responsibility for your health...you are the one that will be living with it for the rest of your life. Now..on a final note...do not take this in any way that I do not agree with the practice of chiropractics...I see mine every week,.,..and will continue to do so..it helps me in so many ways... I just think it would have been wise on my part..in the very beginning..to gather more conclusive evidence as to what was going on with me...and possibly would have approached it in a different manner. Having said that...I must go..for I have a chiropractic appointment...:) if this helps anyone in any way..it was worth the time it took to type it out....I would love a second opportunity,...the results may very well be exactly the same...but..do not ever take good health lightly...my best to all and..Im still doing pretty damn good :) ~William~
