I feel like the less I discipline my kids, the more they listen. There are alternatives to the use of smacking, time-out, sticker charts, bribery, punishments or rewards. Although short term, all of those usual methods of discipline can work for getting kids to do what you want, there are so many long term pitfalls to using any of them! - Save No for when you really mean it. If youre constantly saying No, your child wont even hear it anymore. - Use fun, games and laughter for getting kids to do what you want. Race them to the toilet to get them to go before you leave the house. Tooth brushing? Pretend to brush their toes instead and make them laugh. - Give options. Do you want the red shirt or green shirt? So they feel like they have some autonomy in the situation. - Allow your child to express their negative emotions (crying, raging) without stopping them or distracting them (providing youre in a safe place to do so). By using alternative methods to traditional discipline, everyone in the family can have their needs met, while saving the confidence and trust of the child.
