I first encountered Mingus Big Band when they were still playing - TopicsExpress

I first encountered Mingus Big Band when they were still playing Fez (RIP) here in NYC every week. Over the course of several sessions, I had the good fortune of establishing a (very casual) friendship with John Stubblefield. He was a fabulous musician (sax, flute, oboe) who was also often featured on vocals on such tunes as Hog Callin Blues and (while hes kind of lost in the shuffle on this recording) todays earwig, Fables Of Faubus. One of the few members of the Big Band to have actually played alongside Mingus himself, John was a cornerstone of the group. I will not soon forget seeing John conduct the band from his wheelchair after his cancer diagnosis in 2004. He remained involved with the band up until his untimely death in 2005. youtu.be/7W3lwmIf6m4
