I follow Richard Dawkins and respect many if his views, but a tweet he sent earlier asking moderate muslims to protest the punishment being inflicted on a Saudi blogger by the Saudi state is misguided and pathetic. First of all, moderate muslims, and even devout ones, owe no allegiance to Saudi Arabia, despite its self proclaimed role in sheperding the muslim world. Secondly the Saudi regime doesnt give a shit what moderate muslims think, as they would not consider them muslims. Thirdly, his statement implies some kind of culpability amongst muslims, moderate or not for the actions of a dictatorship supported by the west since its inception, and wich the vast majority of muslims themselves oppose. Should Richard Dawkins and every other person living in the west, where the people ultimately give their governments legitimacy through elections, appologise for the actions of their governments in murderous invasions such as Iraq? Of course not. Its even worse to ask muslims, most of whom are not living in democracies or countries with full freedoms of speech to stand up against dictatorships held in place by the west, at what could be great cost to themselves!? Believe me mr dawkins, most muslims would much rather see democracies in their own lands, and it is the west which has stood in the way of that dream for over 50 years now through their continuing support of those barbarian regimes. So if anyone should appologise, and i dont believe anyone should, then it should be you and every citizen of the UK, the US and the rest of the free world that owes muslims an appology.
