I fully agree with Mfesane Sibotos comment below on a status that was made about how South African have been commenting on the Oscar Pustorius trial. The status basically saying that people who arent qualified or arent experts should not be overly expressing their opinions: Im afraid this smirks of eliticism - people must get some form of education before they speak? sounds like something a white supremist would say to a rural native - by definition, assimilation when said by a native to another. nothing turns on public opinions - they bind no one. so what harm is caused? should we have a passive citizenry because it is not schooled in politics, law, economics? that is propaganda that the idi amins and the likes would have killed for. in a democratic, developed society, that notion we must ridiculed, i am afraid. as a matter of principle based on active citizenship, we must encourage society to have views on issues that affect them - misplaced as they may be. debates and intellectual discourse cannot be a monopoly of the so-called informed. this clever blacks notion is starting to be bothersome for real.
