I generally dislike this new journalism tool that feeds you information in lists that find themselves clever. However, this list actually has quite a lot of value. Next time you feel good about yourself for buying TOMS, please consider what is actually happening. Doing aid work is dangerous. People once said they were on Gods work as they conquered and annihilated entire populations, burned people at the stake, tortured them, stole land, and traded in human bodies. A lot of people still think its a really good idea to go around converting people to religions and life-styles that dont benefit them and only spread hatred. But beyond religion being the good behind which damage is left, the idea of AID and CHARITY are often just as damaging. I have known so many people who believe that doing to another country to teach English is gonna make a world of difference. Who believe that donating old clothes or raising money for aid organisations they know nothing about, or volunteering at those aid organisations. There are times when aid is necessary. Such as, after a devastating natural disaster or war that leaves widespread damage. But on an everyday basis, what is generally really needed is on the ground development and change. What is needed is bigger and stronger countries not thinking that making local governments dependent on aid money is a good idea. Neo-colonialism runs strong in the form of do-gooders. There are no easy solutions to problems. As I was once told, it is important, if you actually want to help, to remember that what you want to do hasnt been done before NOT because the people there before you are lazy, not because they are stupid, and not because they havent worked hard, but because its really f**king difficult. Anyone who actually wants to make progressive change - you have to be ready to be wrong again and again, and you have to be willing to listen. To learn and listen.
