I got an unexpected video call today from a friend here in the US. He’s an Iraqi Jew whose people had suffered great persecution. He’s also an artist who works with a very talented, vibrant community of ethnically diverse people. Some of his fellow artists have turned on him, however, as Israel’s conflict in Gaza (along with the media’s blatant anti-Israel bias) has done its damage. The friend called to thank me for my advocacy for the Jewish State and his people. He’s never felt more alone and isolated. He’s not a political person and (in typical artist fashion) has a very universal love’ approach to people and life. No matter. He is treated with disdain and disgust because his nation is defending itself against a genocidal regime. His environments are often hostile, and he feels he cannot speak his mind or defend his people. What he described is quite intimidating, and very familiar to many, many African-Americans. “When someone outside of our community speaks up for us…it’s really powerful, man. Thank you so much. We are so alone right now.” I told my friend that it is my honor and God-given call. I encouraged him to know that many African-Americans and Latinos stand in solidarity with Israel and the Jewish people; and that we will be making more and more noise. We will not be silent. I was humbled and saddened by his words. I was also stirred to even more action. Got work to do…. #ZionStandUp
