I got some sad news today. Arlam Carr has passed away. Arlam was the son of Johnnie Carr (1911-2008) who was president of the Montgomery Improvement Association for more than 40 years. In 1969, in the 8th grade, Arlam was the nominal plaintiff in Carr v. Montgomery County Board of Education, to desegregate the high schools in Montgomery, Alabama. I met Arlam in the summer of 2007 while documenting a civil rights travel course, and have seen him every summer since. When I saw him this year, I was shocked to see that he had lost a lot of weight and learned that he had cancer. In 2011, I was lucky enough to have filmed an interview with him, conducted by Professor Robert Bickel. Arlam was one of the little-known foot-soldiers of the civil rights movement and a hero to me. I hope you take the time to watch this 25-minute interview and get to know him.
