Take a good look at the picture below. On the left, you will see Nicholas Heyward Jr. On September 27, 1994, Nicholas was playing cops and robbers inside the stairwell of his Brooklyn apartment building when officer Brian George mistook the 13 year old boys toy gun for a real gun and killed him by shooting Heyward Jr. in the stomach. Officer George was never charged for the shooting. On the right, you will see 12 year old Tamir Rice who, last Saturday, was shot in the chest by a police officer after reaching for the toy gun he was playing with outside of a Cleveland rec center. The officers were notified beforehand that the gun was “probably fake.” Although these two cases are 20 years apart, the stark similarities in these young boy’s untimely deaths reveals the saddest thing about police murders of young, Black boys: The fact that history keeps tragically repeating itself no matter how hard we try to prevent it from doing so. thisisyourconscience/2014/11/the-saddest-thing-about-police-murders-of-young-black-boys/
