I grew up loving the sound of God Save the Queen, and it gave me such a sense of pride to hear it sung. When we came to the States, I also came to love the sound of the U.S. National Anthem (and Im half American, so Im privileged to be loyal to both!). I remember having a serious lump in my throat and tears in my eyes when I first heard it sung at an event by thousands of loyal Americans. I especially love this often forgotten stanza: O thus be it ever when freemen shall stand Between their lov’d home and the war’s desolation! Blest with vict’ry and peace may the heav’n rescued land Praise the power that hath made and preserv’d us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto - “In God is our trust,” And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave. Happy 200th birthday, Star-Spangled Banner. May you always symbolize freedom, loyalty, and greatness.
