I grew up on Mt. Tabor... Does anyone remember the birth of the skateboard craze in about 1965 when the city closed down the road between the volcano and the reservoir on Hawthorne...? My big trick was doing a handstand for about 20 until I landed on my head one time... Did anyone build a soap box derby car? how about climbing the face of the volcano before they fenced it off? going to the very top of Mt. Tabor for the view and running down the west face of the hill doing leaps and bounds, or rolling until you were dizzy... or the rope swing off the limb of the big tree on the south side of Tabor just above the Baptist Seminary.... or the play ground on the north side??? Did anyone play tennis on the courts a block off of 61st and Taylor... or Seatons Pharmacy where they had a soda fountain & the gas station on 60th and Belmont? My father built the west wing on the Portland Sanitarium on 60th in 1959, but realized it wasnt big enough right away... that is why he searched for land to build a bigger hospital on... He found out that the city was going to put I-205 in, and found Morningside Hospital, the State Mental Insitution before they moved it to Dammisch in Wilsonville... Did anyone know that Hawthorne Blvd. was originally called Asylum Avenue because the State Insane Asylum was on 12th before they moved it to Morningside? Does anyone know that the original Hawthorne Bridge was a swivel type bridge made from wood, and it burned down about 1904? Does anyone know that the last time Mt Tabor errupted was about 1910? I have to check the date on that actually... I researched the development of Hawthorne Blvd at The Oregon Historical Society when I produced a video for The Hawthorne Blvd Businessmans Association in 1984. Its base layer was lava rock that was excavated from the volcano... That is why 1/2 of the volcano is missing... Now Lava rock is rare and hard to get... They had the first Harmonic Motion Day mini concert at the Volcano in the late 60s... Do you remember the filbert orchard before they turned it into a housing development on 60th and Division, and the original water reservoir on that corner? How about The Bowling Alley on 81st and Division... before it was Lung Fungs? what was the name of that Bowling Alley?
