I had a business idea in high school, but I told myself, “I’m still a high school student, let me first finish high school and I’ll pursue this idea.” Then I completed high school and came to university, but I told myself, “I’m still a university student, let me first finish my degree, gain work experience, then I’ll pursue this idea.” Then I completed my degree and was due to do my articles at Nedbank, and I told myself, “Let me first finish my 3-year articles, qualify as a CA (SA), then I’ll pursue this idea.” After completing my articles, I got a job offer to be a CA (SA) at Nedbank; I accepted it in order to gain more work experience. I found that at Nedbank, I work an 8-17h00 job; it’s very demanding and taxing… In the middle of that, I met a lady and I got married. I then realised that my salary afforded me and my family a comfortable Life. I bought a house in the suburb, drove a nice car, travelled occasionally and I was generally happy. Then, 60-80 years later, I raised my children, hoped that they would become great, grew old and died…and that is my Life story. Isn’t this how many have led their lives, and potentially how we could lead our lives? Being an entrepreneur does not only describe the self-starting businessman (although that is how we have marginalized it as society). I suggest that it also describes one who chooses to define his/her own Life path; one who chooses to reciprocate himself/herself in a different form – whether it is through art, through a business venture, through sport etc. When one chooses to venture onto something from a level of feeling and commits oneself to it, one exercises the creative power that makes one unique and is able to vest it into that venture; thus giving birth to something. Giving birth to his/her company; to his/her name; to his/her art; to his/her soccer skill, and so on. The common feeling that many entrepreneurs share is that of freedom and liberty. We realise that we have the freedom, the liberty, (because we are alive!) to do and be anything we want, and from that realisation we then choose to give birth to an idea. We breathe Life into something that was once nothing by vesting our creative power into it. One does not need an idea; that is secondary. One first needs to realise their infinite freedom to BE… This same sentiment is expressed by sir Richard Branson when he says, “Screw it, let’s do it.” and what Albert Einstein alluded to when he said, “Logic will take you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere It is this feeling that gives birth to passion; to energy; to enthusiasm; to entrepreneurship…
