I had a conversation with a friend a few weeks ago, theyd had a rough weekend woth regards to health and energy, and they felt like theyd failed as a parent and partner. Well this evening, thats how I feel. Weve slept less than 6 hours since Friday. We made it to the autism play event Saturday, and a walk with the dog both days, but other than that weve been zombie parents. We even ordered take out pizza for Sunday dinner becasue I couldnt face cooking. No crafts, no cooking, no seizing every joyful moment of existence. Quite a lot of netflix though. I was in the middle of mentally berating myself, then I remembered what Id said to my friend, and what Id say to each and every one of you if you messaged me to say how crap you were feeling about your performance, or lack thereof: Its easier said than done, but try not to place too much expectation on yourself. If youre constantly trying to push yourself to do stuff that realistically is too much for you, youre always going to feel like youre failing. Its not the way I want to spend weekends - I want to socialise, go out walking, bake with the kids, pinterest style, but when we havent slept, screw it, I bin the to-do list and write a new one with stuff Im actually going to be able to do Its ok to not be super parent sometimes. Or rather, sometimes being super parent means lying awake underneath your cape while your children watch TV and climb on you. #weareallsuperparents
