I had a great experience today with the owner of one of the largest retail nurseries in the south! Our conversation: Him: Im very interested in carrying the Tower Gardens in my store. Me: Tower Gardens arent sold in stores. They are sold by direct sales. I own a Virtual Franchise, not a store. Him: OK, I get that. Its a great product. How much will I make if I sell one? Me: Well, if you get to the highest commission level, your mark-up is 22%. Him: 22%? Im used to a 50% or more mark-up. We cant afford to have an employee spend 20-30 minutes with a customer and only make 22%. Me: Well, the upside is that you hold no stock and put out no money. You dont collect payment or ship the product. But quite honestly, your employees will spend more than 20-30 minutes. We support our customers for life. Ill help you. Him: Thats nice but I have to account for a store, overhead, employees, advertising. I cant survive on a 22% mark-up. Me: Yeah, I get that. Direct sales allows us to have a better built product at a cheaper price. I have no overhead. The company has no advertising costs. We dont have to rent shelf. The product is shipped directly from the warehouse to the customer. Him: OK, if I sign up, will I get territorial rights? Me: No, we dont do territories. The company believes that if a rep gives excellent customer service, they dont need a territory -- they will get sales. Besides, I think every family needs a Tower Gardens. Theres no way you could support every single family in your town. Him: Its a great product. Very high quality. I really like it. Let me see if we can swing it.
