I had a request to address class, income and whether there is a divide in unschooling. I had thought the person asking the question would begin it, but I will start with something Sylvia Woodman wrote on her own page the other day: ____________________ Just back from the a quick trip to the butcher. Both kids found pennies. Gabriella found one from 2014 and Harry found one from 1974. We got waaaaaaay more than two cents worth of value out of that discussion! We talked about if Abraham Lincoln was always on the penny and I told them that I have some pennies from the 1800s with an American Indian on them that I can show them. Then we talked about the phrase In God We Trust and how with money there has to be a kind of leap of faith that the money is worth what it is since its only bits of metal and pieces of paper. Which led to a discussion of the gold standard and why some people think we should return to the gold standard and then that got the kids wondering what would happen if we changed the rules of money in the middle of the game? And would there be enough gold to go around. Then we talked about how some countries use US dollars as their currency since the US is considered more stable than their own money. Then we talked about where money is made and if its still possible maybe we can go tour a mint. Ill need to look up the Philadelphia mint and see if we can go tour it. I remember taking a tour in the early 1980s. I wonder if they still offer them? Then Harry noticed that the two pennies were exactly 40 years apart....All this for two cents. Now THATs value!!! __________________ When it was first written, it was about exploration and connections. I would like to propose that the learning they did had very little to do with money. If I wanted to find fault with them, or consider them to be elitist, the worst I can think is that they can afford to go to the butcher shop. :-) There was a chat last week about these ideas—the resources families have. That turned into a discussion of finding abundance and feeling gratitude.
