Pivot confusion has created hurdles for export growth as well as global strategic incoherence. The Asian pivot, with focus on ASEAN, in 2011 aligned a number of export assistance resources and spurred activity.....and then petered out. More recently an African pivot created conversation, but little in the way of actual activity. In fact during his most recent Africa trip, Obama elected not to visit the largest countries or most rapidly growing economies. And now we have the ongoing rapprochement with the EU - in the stumbling TAFTA or TTIP negotiations that appear destined to fail due to local interests. Trade is an enormous tool in pursuit of economic growth and reduced global tensions. It should be integrated into foreign policy just as surely as military capability. And through exporting, every American SMB can contribute not only to job growth and wealth creation, but also geopolitical stability.
