I had a thought recently that we often get caught up in the humanity of Jesus and try to look at it as some kind of application process. I tend to think that if I were in a room with the human Jesus that we would come to so much disagreement, and hed probably look at my humor like Im an idiot. The divinity of Christ is something separate, its that sheer honesty and appreciation, that no matter what I could say or do to him it would not violate or compromise the love he has for me. That overtook his humanity in every way. Despite Paul, James and John generally disagreeing with each other on the topic of judgement and the days to come I think 1 John 4:17 really expresses the essential truth in all of this: In this world we are like Jesus. People will disagree, but Im with C.S. Lewis on this one— Even Jesus had theology wrong, but was still able to demonstrate that perfect and accurate relationship and perception of the Father. Thats what I think the most important aspect of the cross is. ---- Say what you like,” we shall be told, “the apocalyptic beliefs of the first Christians have been proved to be false. It is clear from the New Testament that they all expected the Second Coming in their own lifetime. And, worse still, they had a reason, and one which you will find very embarrassing. Their Master had told them so. He shared, and indeed created, their delusion. He said in so many words, ‘this generation shall not pass till all these things be done.’ And he was wrong. He clearly knew no more about the end of the world than anyone else.” It is certainly the most embarrassing verse in the Bible. C.S. Lewis, The Worlds Last Night: And Other Essays, p.97 ---- I wouldnt quite say its THE most embarrassing verse in the Bible, as theres some pretty vile stuff in there. But it just goes to show how important relationship is over orthodoxy. Being Christ-like is so much more than orthodoxy.
