I had an email from Alan Campbell, MP for North Tyneside, where I used to live. Here is his message: Good afternoon I usually contact you about things happening in Tynemouth Constituency or issues directly affecting us. But sometimes there are things going on beyond our patch which will have a profound effect on our area. Its hard to believe that in a few days time England and Scotland may be different countries. On September 18th the people of Scotland will vote on whether or not they want to remain in the United Kingdom. I wont get a say on what happens in the referendum. I wont have a vote and neither will you. But I feel strongly that the views of people living in Tynemouth Constituency should be heard. So I’ll be speaking to as many referendum voters as I can, particularly perhaps those who are yet to decide. I respect the rights of the Scottish people to decide but I want them to know how we feel. I would urge you to do the same. If you have friends or family north of the border it’s not too late to contact them – a phone call, a text or an email could all be good ways of reminding them that they and Scotland are valued members of our wider family. Here is my answer: Dear Mr. Campbell, I no longer live in N. Tyneside, but in Scotland. If people from outside your constituency who have no vote were phoning your constituents asking them to vote for another party, how would you react? While the views of non-voters may be amusing, they are of no concern to those of us who will be voting. I believe it’s called democracy. Yours in the hope of a better Scotland, and the better England we all hope will emerge when Scotland decides for self-determination. Brian Holton
